MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of eight militants including a Taliban key commander Qari Hamidullah were killed in the northern Faryab province on Wednesday, army spokesman in the northern region Abdul Hadi Jamal said.

"Acting upon intelligence report, the security forces targeted a Taliban hideout in Qurghan district today in the morning, killing eight rebels including Taliban key commander Qari Hamidullah and his deputy Mistary Mahmoud on the spot," Jamal told Xinhua.

Twelve more including 10 militants and two security personnel were injured, the official added.

The operation, which began late on Tuesday night in Andkhoi and Qurghan districts, would continue until the area was cleared of the insurgents, Jamal said.
