AMMAN, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Jordanian foreign minister on Monday called for a new approach to the Syrian crisis amid "new realities" in the war-torn country.

Ayman Safadi made the remark during his meeting with the UN Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, where he said there is a need for a new approach to helping the Syrians restore stability and security in their country.

He said all efforts should be focused on protection of Syria and preserving its unity and territorial integrity, according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry of Jordan.

Safadi reaffirmed Jordan's support for a political solution in Syria, saying the killing and destruction must come to an end.

On the Rukban camp for Syrian refugees, the Jordanian minister said the key solution is to allow them to return to their hometowns.

For his part, de Mistura voiced appreciation for Jordan's efforts to achieve a political solution in Syria.

The UN envoy said he will present a report to the UN Security Council on Dec. 20 to evaluate the progress in resolving the crisis in Syria.
