BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Velez Sarsfield rose to fifth in the Superliga Argentina standings after grinding out a 3-3 draw at Patronato in the final match before the competition's summer break on Tuesday.

Gabriel Carabajal gave the hosts the lead in the opening minute before Nicolas Dominguez equalized shortly after at the Bartolome Grella stadium in the northeastern Argentine city of Parana.

Patronato regained the lead courtesy of a Mauricio Sperduti strike and they were handed another boost when Velez defender Luis Abram was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge in the 39th minute.

However Matias Vargas netted twice in three second-half minutes to put the visitors ahead 3-2.

But the game was not over and Patronato equalized eight minutes from time when August Sandona headed in from a Sperduti corner.

The result lifted Velez to 25 points, 11 points behind leaders Racing Club, while Patronato remained second-last in the 26-team standings with 10 points.

In Tuesday's only other match, Tigre secured a 2-1 away win against fellow relegation candidates Belgrano.

The Superliga Argentina will go into recess after Thursday's match between Huracan and Argentinos Juniors, resuming on January 27.
