RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira on Tuesday regretted his successor's decision to pull Brazil out of the UN Global Compact for Migration.
The agreement is a comprehensive treaty on migration and was signed on Monday by 163 countries, including Brazil. But the incoming Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo said Brazil is going to be pulled out of the treaty.
Ferreira said that the deal does not authorize indiscriminate immigration and would not threaten Brazil's sovereignty.
Araujo argued that migrations should not be treated as a global issue, but instead as a problem particular to each country. And the agreement is inadequate to deal with the migration issue.
However, Ferreira said that "it is indeed a global issue."
"All regions of the world are affected by migrations, sometimes as origin points, sometimes as transit points and sometimes as destinations. That is the reason for the need for global responses,"said the minister.
According to Ferreira, the agreement entails international cooperation to fight irregular migrations and provides fair treatment to immigrants, including about 3 million Brazilians living abroad, he said.
"The pact is not incompatible with Brazil's reality: we are a multi-ethnic country, formed by immigrants from all over the world," the minister added.
