MADRID, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid suffered their worst ever defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday night when they were beaten 3-0 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium by CSKA Moscow.

The Russians had beaten Madrid 1-0 in Moscow earlier in the competition, but were not expected to do the same in Madrid's home ground.

However, against a Real Madrid side that was already assured of finishing top of their group, the Russians took advantage of the changes Santiago Solari introduced into his side.

Virtually nothing went right for Madrid in the game and they fell behind in the 22nd minute when Fedor Chalov beat Thibaut Courtois with a left foot shot.

Georgi Schennikov doubled CSKA's lead three minutes before halftime with his left foot and Arnor Sigurdsson finished the game off 18 minutes from time.

To make a bad night worse for Real Madrid, midfielder Isco reacted to boos from the stand and was the target of criticism from the stands until the final whistle. Meanwhile Gareth Bale, who entered the game as a halftime substitute for Karim Benzema, ended the match with an ankle injury.

Real Madrid still finish top of their group, but Viktoria Plzen's 2-1 win over Roma means that CSKA Moscow fail to qualify for the Europa League despite their win.

Wednesday also saw Valencia in action at home to Manchester United and although the game had nothing at stake with United assured of qualifying for the last 16 and Valencia condemned to play the Europe League in the New Year, the Spaniards will take a big confidence boost from their 2-1 win.

Both sides fielded strong starting elevens even though there was nothing more than pride at stake and Valencia were clearly motivated to claim a win after recent disappointments in LaLiga.

Carlos Solar opened the scoring in the 17th minute, while the second goal was a bad error from Phil Jones two minutes after halftime. The central defender stabbed the ball past keeper Sergio Romero while attempting to challenge Michy Batshuayi and could only watch as it ran into the net.

Marcos Rashford scored a late consolation goal in the 87th minute following a cross from Ashley Young.
