KABUL, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier has died in a non-combat related incident in Afghanistan, the NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) confirmed on Friday.

"A U.S. service member assigned to the Resolute Support Mission died Dec. 13, 2018 in a non-combat related incident," the RS said in a statement.

The brief statement did not give details, saying "the service member's name will be released 24 hours after next of kin notification."

The incident is under investigation, according to the statement.

The Resolute Support Mission is a NATO-led mission launched in January 2015 after NATO and U.S. forces ended their combat mission.

Around 16,000 foreign forces are currently stationed in Afghanistan for the mission to help Afghan forces in the fields of training, advising and backing them in the war on insurgents.
