BUJUMBURA, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Burundian government on Friday passed a bill on transitioning the current capital city Bujumbura into the commercial capital and setting up the political capital in Gitega town, central Burundi, an official said.
The bill presented by Minister of Interior, Civic Education and Local Development, Pascal Barandagiye was passed during a meeting of the council of ministers held in Gitega town, some 100 kilometers west of Bujumbura, Burundian president spokesperson Jean Claude Karerwa said on Twitter.
The council of ministers will hold its meetings in Gitega town since January 2019, said Karerwa.
Five ministries out of the 21 government ministries will move to Gitega by January 2019, said Karerwa, who described the bill as "historic."
