TEHRAN, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of Iran's Expediency Discernment Council, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, died at the age 70 on Monday, Tasnim news agency reported.
The senior Iranian cleric passed away at a hospital in Tehran after his health deteriorated due to chronic disease.
Shahroudi, as the Iranian cleric and conservative politician, held chairman of Expediency Discernment Council since Aug. 2017.
The council is an administrative assembly established in February 1988 to resolve differences or conflicts between the Iranian parliament and the Guardian Council of Constitution.
Shahroudi held a number of other posts after victory of the Islamic revolution in 1978, including being the member of the Assembly of Experts (since Feb. 1999), and the chief of Iran's Judiciary (Oct. 2014 - March 2015).
