Somalia's autonomous region of Puntland elects new president

MOGADISHU, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sa'id Abdulahi Deni, a former Somali Minister for Planning, was on Tuesday elected President of the autonomous region of Puntland to serve for a five-year term.

Abdihakim Mohamed Ahmed (Dhobo), chairperson of electoral commission and Puntland State House Representatives, announced the result, which revealed Deni got 35 votes while his closest rival, Asad Osman Abdulahi, got 31 votes in the third round of voting.

The newly elected president thanked Puntland State House of Representatives who voted for him to lead the regional Administration for the next five years.

Twenty one presidential candidates including incumbent Abdiweli Mohamed Ali participated in the election on December 29.
