VILNIUS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Lithuanian Army established on Tuesday its new Communications and Information Systems battalion amid developing new forms of security threats.

The new battalion established in Lithuanian capital Vilnius will be tasked with ensuring safety of communications between separate units of the Lithuanian Army, according to the announcement from the Lithuanian Defense Ministry.

"It will be an important pillar for the Army at a time when threats have developed new invisible forms," Edvinas Kerza, the Lithuanian Deputy Defense Minister, was quoted as saying in the announcement.

"Units of the Lithuanian Army are dependent on various new technologies and systems like never before," added Kerza.

The Lithuanian Army didn't disclose any details about the size and activities of the new battalion.

Lithuania, a small Baltic country with a population of less than 3 million and NATO Eastern-flank country, has been stepping up its defense capabilities since 2014 citing security threats in the Eastern Europe.
