MALE, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives government has made it compulsory to wear helmets on the newly opened China-Maldives Friendship Bridge connecting capital Male and the airport island, local media reports said Friday.

Transport Minister Aishath Nahula said the decision was made to ensure the safety of people crossing the bridge every day on motorbikes.

The minister said the new helmet rule would take effect on March 10 and anyone found in violation would be penalized.

The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the first cross-sea bridge in the Maldives, opened to traffic in August last year. It was an iconic project of the Maldives and China in co-building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
