1 child dead, 3 injured in C. Indonesia landslide

JAKARTA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A landslide hit children playing close to a cliff in West Java province of central Indonesia, killing one and injuring three others, disaster management agency said here Friday.

Spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said two other children escaped the fatal disaster.

Sutopo posted a video online that displayed villagers helping a limp child out of sodden earth on Thursday afternoon.

The landslide struck when the children were playing near an area where the construction of double rail tracks was being undertaken in Nyalindung village of Sukabumi district.

Evacuation and risk assessment were undertaken by villagers and the personnel of the disaster agency, Sutopo told Xinhua.

More than 30 people were killed when landslides buried a total of 29 houses in Sinaresmi village of the district on Jan. 1, according to the agency.

Indonesia is frequently hit by landslide, flash flood and flood during heavy downpours. The wet season has kicked off since November in Indonesia.
