BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The mayor of Beijing on Monday said more land would be supplied for public rentals and affordable houses, while stepping up the transformation of shanty towns in 2019.

According to the annual government work report, delivered by Chen Jining at the opening meeting of the annual session of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, 1,200 hectares of land are planned for housing projects in the new year.

A total of 50,000 public rental houses, and 60,000 government-funded houses will be built in 2019, Chen said, adding that 11,500 households in shanty towns would be moved to new homes.

Last year, 32,300 public rental houses and 29,000 government-funded houses were allocated to residents in need, with 30 percent being offered to families without Beijing hukou, the local resident permit.

Construction of 54,500 affordable houses has already begun. About 34,300 former shanty-town households live in better homes, beating the municipal government's annual plan, Chen said.
