MADRID, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Football League (La Liga) on Wednesday announced that the first half of the season has seen record attendances in the top two divisions of the Spanish game.

A total of 7,520,225 fans watched games in La Liga and the second division from inside stadiums - 602,372 (8.7 percent) more than in the first half of the 2017-18 campaign.

La Liga say this is the first time ever that the seven million barrier has been broken.

5,172,228 fans watched matches in La Liga, 2.35 percent more than last season, with an average of 27,222 fans per game.

Meanwhile, the presence of well-supported clubs such as Malaga, Osasuna, Sporting Gijon, Deportivo la Coruna and Granada helped produce a 25 percent rise in the number of fans at matches in the second division, where games were watched by a total of 2,347,997 fans, in comparison with 1,864,567 the previous year.

La Liga say they hope this positive first half to the season will allow them to reach a total of 15 million fans by the end of the campaign.
