AMMAN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A meeting between the Yemeni government and the Houthis started in Jordan's capital Amman on Wednesday over an agreement to swap prisoners and detainees.

Hanan Badawi, spokeswoman of UN special envoy on Yemen, said in a statement that the two-day meeting was attended by representatives from the UN envoy office and the Red Cross.

The UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths voiced appreciation for Jordan to host the meeting and support the peace efforts in Yemen, she added.

"The meeting is for technical purposes and is part of efforts to follow up on the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement and discussions in Sweden in this regard," Badawi said.

Abdelqader al-Murtada, representative of the Houthis in the meeting and head of the prisoners and detainees committee, said in another statement that the meeting is meant to look into obstacles that prevented the implementation of the deal on prisoners reached in Sweden.

"The other side (Yemeni government) did not provide a full list with the name of all prisoners and we asked the UN envoy that the government's delegation should provide name lists," al-Murtada said.

"The meeting in Amman is not for talks as we have already reached an agreement in Sweden and we are here to follow up on that agreement," the Houthi representative added.

After consultations in Sweden, the two sides reached in December 2018 an agreement to swap about 15,000 prisoners.

The Stockholm Agreement called for the urgent need to address the dire humanitarian situation and insecure conditions faced by the Yemeni people.

The parties reached an agreement on the city of Hodeidah and the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Issa, an executive mechanism on activating the prisoner exchange agreement, and a statement of understanding on Taiz, a southwestern city in Yemen.
