RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Former Atletico Madrid and Brazil international midfielder Diego has ended weeks of speculation about his future by signing a two-year contract extension with Flamengo.
The 33-year-old agreed to terms late on Tuesday, having considered an offer from Orlando City, whom he could have joined on a free transfer in July.
"I'm happy and satisfied to be staying here," Diego told reporters. "There were some difficult moments [in negotiations]. Some proposals, like the one from Orlando City, made me think.
"But my desire to remain at Flamengo made the difference. I came to the conclusion that there are still things that I want to win with this club."
The announcement is the latest boost to Flamengo's hopes of ending a decade-long Brazilian Serie A title drought this year.
In the past month, the club has signed defender Rodrigo Caio and striker Gabriel Barbosa - both Brazil internationals - and Uruguay playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta.
