UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- While the overall situation in Colombia is improving, the country still faces "daunting tasks," including a full implementation of the peace agreement the government signed with guerrilla fighters over two years ago, a Chinese UN envoy said Wednesday.

"Thanks to the joint efforts of the Colombian government and relevant parties, the national security situation in Colombia has been generally stable with state institution being restored, economic recovery underway and peace process bearing fruits," said Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Colombia.

However, Wu said that the security situation in some parts of Colombia remains fragile, and that the country still "has the daunting tasks of fully implementing the peace agreement, reintegrating former combatants, fighting organized crimes, and realizing economic and social development."

Wu condemned a car bombing outside the National Police Academy in Bogota last week, which left 21 dead. He conveyed condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families and the injured.

Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Colombia was once troubled by a long-running conflict between government security forces and various armed opposition groups, including the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The conflict had left more than 220,000 people killed since in 1964.

The security situation in the country remains fragile despite a peace agreement signed by the Colombian government and FARC in 2016.

Wu noted that the Colombian government has comprehensively assessed the situation in the country and endeavors to seek consensus with all parties in Colombia on a revision of the peace agreement.

"We hope that all parties in Colombia will cherish the hard-won peace process, further solidify consensus, meet each other half-way and resolve their differences by carrying on the inclusive dialogue and negotiation," the Chinese envoy said.

Wu said China will join other members of the UN Security Council to support the work of the secretary-general's special representative for Colombia, advance the Colombian peace process and contribute to an early realization of comprehensive peace and stability in the country.
