DAMASCUS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Eshaq Jahangiri, first vice president of Iran, arrived in Syria's capital Damascus on Monday for meetings with top officials.

The top Iranian official is expected to hold meetings with Syrian officials and promote cooperation between his country and the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The two-day visit comes as part of Tehran's effort to assist Syria in its reconstruction process.

The visit also comes in the light of the repetitive Israeli strikes on Syria, which are reportedly targeting Iranian-run bases in Syria.

Iran has been a key supporter to the Syrian government in the face of the more than seven-year-long insurgency.
