TOKYO, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks retreated Tuesday morning as subpar corporate earnings reports from some U.S. bellwethers caused consternation about their peers here who are set to report from this week amid jitters over key market-moving events slated for this week.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 200.53 points, or 0.97 percent, from Monday to 20,448.47.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 11.37 points, or 0.73 percent, at 1,544.14.

Machinery, electric appliance, and oil and coal product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
