BEIRUT, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Philippe Lazzarini, deputy UN special coordinator for Lebanon, said the Lebanese borders with Israel have been the most stable in the Middle East for the past few years, local newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported Thursday.

"Lebanon and Israel do not want to go into war so we can say that a war will not take place," Lazzarini was quoted as saying.

"This is why we should follow up continuously on these matters to prevent any escalatory measures in this regard," he said.

Lazzarini also noted that the tunnel issue must also be followed up so that it does not lead to dangerous developments on the borders.

On Dec. 4 last year, the Israeli army launched Northern Shield operation to "locate and thwart" tunnels allegedly dug by Hezbollah into northern Israel.

Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 which ended in a cease-fire.
