LONDON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United striker Anthony Martial on Thursday signed a contract extension which will keep him at the club until the end of June 2024 with the option for a further year.

The decision marked a massive turnaround in fortunes for the 23-year-old, whose agent had said in the summer that he wanted to leave the club, due mainly to his poor relationship for former coach Jose Mourinho.

The striker's original deal had been due to expire this summer before Manchester United activated a one-year contract extension in November and with Ole Gunnar Soljskaer replacing Mourinho at the end of last year, Martial's fortunes have improved drastically and he is once again a regular starter.

"I am loving my time at this club. From the day I joined I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support," said the striker on the Manchester United website.

"This club is all about winning trophies and I am sure the next piece of silverware is not that far away," he added.

Meanwhile, Soljskaer was also satisfied to see the striker put pen to paper on his contract.

"Anthony is one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with. For a young man, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him."

"This is the perfect club for Anthony to progress his development as a top-class forward and we are all delighted he has signed a long-term deal," said Soljskaer.
