ISTANBUL, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least one person died and four others were trapped under rubber on Wednesday when an eight-storey apartment building collapsed in Istanbul.
The incident happened in the Kartal district on the Asian side of the city, according to the NTV broadcaster.
The live coverage by the broadcaster shows the rescue operation is continuing, and the report said additional rescue teams have been dispatched to the area from the neighboring provinces of Bursa and Sakarya.
A total of 12 families lived in the building, eyewitnesses were quoted as saying.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear, though some residents said they heard an explosion before the incident.
