YANGON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Union Parliament has approved a motion to form a joint committee to expeditiously implement steps for amending the 2008 constitution, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Thursday.

The urgent motion was tabled to the House of Nationalities (Upper House) by parliament representative from Magway region constituency U Aung Kyi Nyunt.

The preparatory joint committee will be formed with an appropriate and equitable number of representatives from the two Houses and the deputy speaker of the Union Parliament will be assigned as the chair of the joint committee which also includes the representatives of political parties and the military proportionately, said Speaker of the Union Parliament U T Khun Myat.

Further duties, responsibilities, rights and terms of the joint committee will also be assigned, he added.

The motion aims to conduct an all-inclusive and participatory work toward preparing a bill to amend the constitution.

U Aung Kyi Nyunt, who put forward the urgent proposal on Jan. 29 to make amendment to the 2008 constitution, stressed the need for such a move to achieve mutual confidence.

"This is a time where under the auspices of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference to establish perpetual peace and national reconciliation. It has already been agreed that the Union must be based on democracy and federalism." he told the parliament on the day he made the proposal.
