SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out on Sunday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight erupted at village Devsar of Kulgam district, about 73 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"A gunfight has started between militants and joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army here at Devsar this morning," a senior police official posted in Kulgam told Xinhua. "Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area."
The exchange of fire was going on until last reports poured in, police said.
Officials said the village was cordoned off following specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.
A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
