Macao chief executive to be elected in fair, transparent manner: election management committee president

MACAO, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The management committee of Macao chief executive election will strictly follow the legal provisions and apply the law in a fair, transparent, efficient and loyal manner during the upcoming election, the special administrative region (SAR) government news release quoted the committee's president as saying on Thursday.

Song Man Lei, the president of SAR chief executive election management committee, told the press that the aim of the management committee is fulfilling its duties and working in the fifth election of the chief executive, including the election of members of the chief executive's election committee.

She said based on the experiences and practices of the last election, the management committee will hold weekly meetings to discuss the specific issues and work related to the elections.

According to the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, the chief executive, with a five-year tenure for each term, shall be elected by a 400-member committee. The election of members of the chief executive election committee was scheduled for June 16, 2019, according to a government communiqué on Feb. 4.

According to Macao's law, the current chief executive should also appoint a management committee with a president and members in 15 days after the date of election for members of chief executive election committee is published.
