SYDNEY, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese team started strongly at the first event of the SailGP, a brand new extreme sailing event, on Sydney Harbour on Friday.

In race one, the Chinese red boat finished second behind Japan - the first race of the event ever and a milestone for all involved.

Conditions were moderate on the harbour, levelling the field, at which point the Asian teams made their move.

However, of the day's three races, the first was the best for China which dropped to the back of the fleet for the late afternoon competitions.

"We obviously did really well in the first race finishing second and then the second race we didn't really have a good one - we got a bit stuck in the pack which is quite hard," skipper Phil Robertson said.

Overall, the Chinese team now has some ground to make up in Saturday's racing with plenty of room for improvement. Enditem
