"The Wandering Earth" continues to lead Chinese box office

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's sci-fi blockbuster "The Wandering Earth" continued to dominate the Chinese mainland box office after the Spring Festival, according to the China Film News Tuesday.

Adapted from the short story written by Hugo Award Winner Liu Cixin, the film was the biggest winner in the holiday film market. Released on Feb. 5, the film raked in 3.7 billion yuan (541 million U.S. dollars) as of Sunday, the newspaper reported.

Its total box office is the second highest in China's all-time box office record, trailing behind the 2017 action film "Wolf Warriors II" with over 5.6 billion yuan in the domestic market, according to Maoyan, a professional box office tracker.

Another sci-fi film "Crazy Alien", directed by Ning Hao and starring Huang Bo, came in second with box office of 2 billion yuan.

Comedy film "Pegasus" directed by Han Han came in third, making 405 million yuan last week. Since its release on Feb. 5, the film has made 1.45 billion yuan at the box office.

Animated film "Boonie Bears: Blast Into The Past" took fourth gaining 168 million yuan last week and total box office sales of 629 million yuan.

The last in the top five on weekly basis was the romance film "Fall in Love at First Kiss." Premiered on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, the film earned more than 121 million yuan within four days.
