LONDON, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Manchester City fan is in hospital in Germany after an alleged assault left him with a brain injury following their 3-2 win away to Schalke 04 in the first leg of Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday night.

Staff from the English Premier League giant remained in Germany to offer support to the 32-year-old supporter, who was injured close to the end of the game in which the English club came from behind to win dramatically with two late goals.

German police issued a statement, explaining that "shortly before the end of yesterday's Champions League encounter in the Veltins Arena at 22.50 on the promenade in front of the guest fan block S1 there was a violent clash between two supporters of Schalke and Manchester City."

"In the wrangling, a 32-year-old Englishman was hit by a blow that caused him to fall to the ground. In this fall, he suffered a massive brain injury.

"An emergency ambulance took him to the local emergency medical center for treatment at a local hospital. There is currently acute danger to life."

The German police added that they have set up an investigation and are appealing for witnesses.

Manchester City said, "club staff have remained in Germany to support the family of an injured City fan who is currently in a critical condition in hospital."

Greater Manchester police informed they were "working alongside the football clubs and German authorities to support their investigation and the man's family in any way we can." Enditem
