MEDELLIN, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Former Paraguay international midfielder Sergio Aquino converted the decisive spot kick as Libertad advanced to the Copa Libertadores group phase by beating Colombia's Atletico Nacional on penalties here on Thursday.

Jeison Lucumi had given the 2016 champions the lead on the night with a 34th-minute header after Hernan Barco's assist at Nacional's Atanasio Girardot Stadium.

The goal left the sides level on aggregate after Libertad's 1-0 first-leg victory in Asuncion last week.

Both sides defended resolutely thereafter, forcing the qualifying playoff into a shootout. Daniel Bocanegra missed Nacional's first spot kick and the visitors then converted each of their five attempts to prevail 5-4.

The result means Libertad will contest in Group H of South America's premier club competition alongside Brazil's Gremio, Universidad Catolica of Chile and Argentina's Rosario Central.
