KRASNOYARSK, Russia, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Power house Canada enjoyed a 10-0 big win over China on the first competition day of 2019 Winter Universiade women's ice hockey event on Friday.

The women's ice hockey event started one day before the Opening Ceremony of the Universiade.

Canada took home three medals at the 2017 version of Winter Universiade, including a silver medal in women's hockey and a bronze in men's hockey. China was listed fourth two years ago in Almaty, but with the graduation of several key players, the team seemed to be short-handed.

As one of the strongest teams in women's ice hockey, Canada took a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first period.

China managed to control the goal-loss to 1 in the second quarter, only to see Canada dominated the final period and concluded the match 10-0.

Canada totaled as many as 91 shooting attempts throughout the match, while China only made three.

"The opponent is strong, and we tried our best," said Chinese goalkeeper Jiang Yue.

"We learned from the match and the experience will help us prepare the future matches better."

Canada will next meet another Asian team Japan, while China will take on host team Russia.

Six teams are taking part in women's ice hockey event in Krasnoyarsk. Each of them will play five games between March 1-8. The top four teams after the five matches will make into the semifinal. Enditem
