RIGA, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Freight shipping by land and rail rose in Latvia last year, the latest data released on Monday by the national statistics office showed.
Compared to 2017, total freight turnover in ton-kilometers grew 8.2 percent in 2018 as the amount of freight shipped in Latvia rose by 11.7 percent on year to 128.6 tons, statistics show.
Freight shipping by rail was up 12.5 percent and the turnover of rail freight increased by 19 percent.
The amount of freight carried by land grew by 12.8 percent, while the turnover of this type of freight remained roughly the same as in 2017, rising by 0.2 percent.
Meanwhile, shipping of oil via pipelines fell by 21.3 percent on year.
Latvia's ports recorded an increase in freight turnover for 2018 as they handled 66.2 million tons of freight last year, an increase of 6.9 percent against 2017.
