Macao's population reaches over 660,000

MACAO, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The total population in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) at the end of 2018 reached more than 660,000, with the female population accounting for 53.1 percent of the total, the SAR's statistics service said on Wednesday.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that the total population at the end of 2018 increased by 14,300 year-on-year to 667,400. The local population went up by 1.6 percent year-on-year to 548,200.

The proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year to 11.1 percent, whereas that of adult population (aged between 15 and 64) dropped by 1.0 percentage point to 75.7 percent.

In 2018, a total of 5,925 live births were delivered, down by 604 year-on-year. The sex ratio of newborns was 117.2, corresponding to 117.2 male babies per 100 female babies. Meanwhile, mortality decreased by 51 year-on-year to 2,069 in 2018.
