Average salary adds slightly in Taiwan last year: survey

TAIPEI, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The average monthly salary in Taiwan added 1.02 percent from previous year to 36,571 new Taiwan dollars (about 1,185 U.S. dollars) in 2018, according to a survey released Friday by job service website 1111 Job Bank.

However, most salary-earners said such gains were not obvious after adjusted for inflation, according to the survey that collected 297,140 effective samples in Taiwan last year.

The consumer price index, a key measure for inflation, rose 1.35 percent from the previous year in Taiwan last year, data from the official statistical agency showed.

Average starting salaries for different sectors varied greatly. The information technology sector saw the highest level at 35,413 new Taiwan dollars, followed by the construction and finance industries, with 34,807 new Taiwan dollars and 34,596 new Taiwan dollars, respectively, the survey found.

Meanwhile, the service sectors of art and decoration design, pre-school education and short-term training, as well as the beauty, salon and catering industries posted the lowest starting salary levels, all below 30,000 new Taiwan dollars, according to the survey.
