At least 56 people dead in road crash in Ghana

ACCRA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Police have so far counted at least 56 bodies of the dead in a fatal road crash in midland Ghana on Friday morning, a senior officer told Xinhua via telephone.

The crash involving two buses at Ampomakrom on the Kintampo-Techiman Highway took place early Friday.

Reports said a VVIP branded bus with registration number GT3915-17 on its way from Garu to Kumasi collided with a Grand Bird bus with registration number GT5694-18 driving from Accra to Bolgatanga.

One of the buses caught fire as a result of the accident resulting in dozens of the passengers getting burnt.

"We are still retrieving charred bodies from the burnt bus and so far 35 charred bodies have been retrieved from that one, and 21 bodies have also been retrieved from the second bus," Alex Obeng, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Police Motor Traffic and Transport Division said.

He added that casualty figures kept going up since some of the injured sent to the hospitals were said to have died.

Meanwhile, some injured persons were in critical condition and have been sent to the hospitals in Techiman and Kintampo.
