BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese-developed "Landing" artificial intelligence (AI) cloud platform for cervical cancer screening is set to open to the world from April, the center that has developed the platform's core technologies has announced.

The cloud based cervical cancer AI diagnostic technology has turned the diagnosis experiences accumulated over the years by medical circles into algorithms and models, enabling the tracing of cancer cells from digitized images, Sun Xiaorong, chief scientist with the Landing AI cytological diagnosis research center, Wuhan University, told a press conference Thursday in Beijing. The center owns the core intellectual property rights of the technology.

"After pictorial information of cell samples are collected by the sampling institution and transfered via internet to the cloud diagnostic platform, AI will complete the diagnosis procedure automatically, while pathologists only need to review and confirm those positive cases," Sun said.

The standardized screening through the cloud diagnostic platform will save a great deal of manual labor, as positive cases are usually in a minority during cervical cancer screening, she added.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women worldwide, with an estimated 570,000 new cases reported in 2018 and 311,000 deaths from the disease in the same year, according to the World Health Organization.
