TEHRAN, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Iran welcomed a recent Arab League (AL) statement which endorses Syria's sovereignty over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Press TV reported on Monday.
AL's move to support Syria's territorial integrity was a positive and promising step amid U.S. efforts to legitimize Israel's occupation of Golan Heights, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Sunday.
"We believe that Muslim world should continue to prioritize the issue of occupation of Arab-Muslim lands" by Israel, Qasemi was quoted as saying.
On March 21, U.S. President Donald Trump made an announcement, calling for the United States to officially recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and formally annexed the territory in 1981. But the annexation has not been recognized by the international community.
