DHAKA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- An early morning fire gutted dozens of shops in a kitchen market in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Thursday, Kazi Nazmuzzaman, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, told Xinhua.

He said a total of 16 fire units battled hard for over two hours to bring the fire under control at about 5:35 a.m. local time.

The fire originated at about 3:15 a.m. local time in the one-story Khilgaon Kitchen Market, housing some 1,300 shops in its three separate blocks which are attached to each other, said the official.

According to the official, the blaze gutted 25 shops where groceries and other kitchen goods are sold.

Mahfuz Reven, a duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, said that a fireman sustained injuries while he was trying to douse the fire.

Firefighters have not determined the cause of the blaze.
