LONDON, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The average house prices across Britain fell to 233,181 pounds (about 305,303 U.S. dollars) in March, 1.6 percent lower than the previous month, according to mortgage lender Halifax on Friday.

Halifax's house price index showed that house prices in January-March were 3.2 percent higher than in the same period a year earlier, and 1.6 percent more over the preceding three months.

Russell Galley, managing director of Halifax, said: "This reduction partly corrects the significant growth seen last month and again demonstrates the risk in focusing too heavily on short-term, volatile measures."

"The need to build up a deposit before getting a mortgage is still a challenge for many looking to buy property," Galley added.

"These conflicting challenges, when combined with the ongoing uncertainty around Brexit, have had an impact across the country but most notably in London, meaning that we continue to expect subdued price growth for the time being," Galley said.
