KIGALI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The first edition of Africa Zone V youth games concluded in the Huye district, southern Rwanda on Saturday with France taking most medals.

The games running from April 2 attracted 12 countries and regions including 11 that form Zone V and France as a guest nation. They ended with the junior cycling road race, in which Donait Tsegay of Eritrea won the women's gold medal and her compatriot Yohannes Gebrehiwet won the gold in men's section after covering a distance of 56.6km along Huye roads.

About 350 participants competed for 39 titles across five different disciplines namely athletics, beach volley, 3X3 basketball, cycling and taekwondo.

France won 10 medals in total, including seven gold medals. Kenya emerged the second with a total of 14 medals, including five gold while hosts Rwanda finished third on the tally with four gold medals.

Co-organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees for Africa, the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee and Rwanda's Ministry of Sports, the games presented an opportunity to educate the participating youth about the impact of sport in building peace and fostering unity and reconciliation in the society in line with the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, according to organizers.

Egypt will host the second edition of the Africa Zone V Youth Games in 2021.
