XI'AN, April 12 (Xinhua) -- A new archaeological research base was established Friday in Xixian New Area of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The base, co-founded by Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology and a management committee under Xixian New Area, covers an area of 1,619.31 square meters. It's equipped with a monitoring room, a warehouse of historical relics, a photography room and four rooms for relics restoration.

As the largest and most sophisticated base outside the academy, it can house 48 staff members working at the same time, according to Sun Zhouyong, head of the academy.

Xixian New Area is home to abundant cultural and historical relics, many of which that have been excavated are deemed precious and rare.

The base is conducive to the protection and research of the relics in the region, said Zhou Kuiying, deputy head of the provincial cultural heritage administration.

Shaanxi is famous for its rich archaeological resources, including the Mausoleum of Qinshihuang and the Terracotta Warriors.
