Gong prevails, Lyu renews javelin Asian record at Chinese Athletics GP

HUANGSHI, China, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Reigning world shot put champion Gong Lijiao continued her dominance in national level with a convincing victory while world top ranked Lyu Huihui renewed her own javelin Asian record at the second leg of Chinese Athletics Grand Prix which concluded here on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Gong, representing the Hebei team, produced five over-18m throws from six attempts to clinch the title at 18.78 meters, continuing her unbeaten run in 2019. Bian Ka from the Army team settled second at 17.50m, followed by Song Jiayuan of Shanghai at 17.37.

Lyu of Team Hubei took the headline on Saturday as she registered a massive hurl of 67.72 meters with her last round effort, beating her own Asian record of 67.69m set last May in Halle, Germany. Liu Shiying of Shandong, the world No. 3 in the IAAF ranking system, finished second at 65.80. The bronze went to Yu Yuzhen of the Army team at 62.30m.

It is the second victory in five days for Lyu, who also curised to the top podium with 64.48m at the first stop of the national GP in Zhaoqing on Tuesday. Her winning mark in Huangshi also stands on top of the world leading list in the current season.
