UNITED NATIONS, April 15 (Xinhua) -- UN General Assembly President Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces on Monday called for generosity toward people fleeing military clashes in Libya.
Asked whether Libya's immediate neighbor in Europe, Italy, should keep its ports open for people fleeing Libya, Espinosa's spokeswoman Monica Grayley said: "I think the PGA (president of General Assembly) has said very clearly in past situations that we need solidarity from countries to deal with people in emergency situations."
She said no one country should bear the brunt of the movement of people trying to flee violence in Libya. "This is one of the points of the Global Compact for Migration that countries share the burden."
"The most important point for the PGA -- she's following this situation in Libya with great concern -- is that the people will be treated with respect, their rights will be respected. They will be treated with dignity."
Espinosa condemns the violence in Libya and the military escalation. She urges all sides in the conflict to end hostilities and to provide support to humanitarian workers and all civilians, said Grayley.
Espinosa stresses that there is no military solution in Libya, she said.
