MUSCAT, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Minerals Development Oman (MDO), the Sultanate's mining investment flagship, signed on Tuesday a joint venture agreement with Oman's Assarain Group for the joint development of a new gabbro concession in Liwa.

The signing took place at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) at the sidelines of Oman Mining Expo, which opened on Monday in Oman's capital city Muscat.

Located in Liwa in North Al Batinah Governorate, the Liwa gabbro project covers an area of about 2 sq km.

The mineable quantity of the project is estimated at 211 million tons with a production of 5 million tons per annum. Gabbro is a material used in the building and construction sector.

Nasser Maqbali, CEO of MDO, said: "This agreement will be another stepping stone for MDO as a facilitator and enabler in developing the mining sector in Oman."
