6 Chinese pairs advance at table tennis worlds

BUDAPEST, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese pairs including the unseeded mixed doubles duo Fan Zhendong/Ding Ning all cruised into next round at the world table tennis championships here on Monday.

Fan and Ding, seeded first in the men's and women's singles respectively, combined to join Xu Xin/Liu Shiwen in the top 16.

Xu and Liu handed a 4-0 defeat to Luxembourg's duo - Luka Mladenovic and 55-year-old Ni Xialian, and then ousted a Czech pair in straight sets.

Fan and Ding lost the third set in their 4-1 win over Hungary's Nandor Ecseki and Dora Madarasz, and then shut out the top seeded Hong Kong pair of Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem 4-0 in the second round.

Fan said the Hong Kong players were strong as the third set went all the way to 18-16.

In the men's doubles first round, Ma Long/Wang Chuqin and Liang Jingkun/Lin Gaoyuan both triumphed with a score of 4-1.

Chen Meng/Zhu Yuling and Sun Yingsha/Wang Manyu both reached the women's doubles second round following their straight-set victories.

Earlier in the day, the International Table Tennis Federation chose the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu as a host to the 2022 world team championships.
