SAN SALVADOR, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Former Uruguay international striker Sebastian "El Loco" Abreu will return to El Salvador's Santa Tecla FC as head coach, the club announced on social media.

The 42-year-old replaces Argentine Cristian Diaz, who stepped down last week after a poor run of results.

Abreu scored 13 goals in 21 league appearances for Santa Tecla in 2016, helping the team secure the Clausura title by netting twice in the final against Alianza.

According to Uruguayan newspaper Ovacion, Abreu intends to continue playing while carrying out his duties as manager.

The former Deportivo La Coruna forward is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as having played for more clubs - 27 in 25 seasons - than any other footballer in history.

Last year he broke the previous record held by German goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel, who represented 25 teams in six continents before retiring in 2011.

Abreu, capped 70 times for Uruguay's national team, parted ways with Brazilian Serie D side Rio Branco this month after a 12-week spell.
