PARIS, April 29 (Xinhua) -- France took note of Spain's legislative election's result, and pledged to work with the new government in a way to defend Europe's sovereignty and unity, the country's Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"Spain is France's major partner, to which we associate a cooperation based on great confidence and strong convergence of views on main European issues," the ministry said.

"We want to work with the next Spanish government in favor of a sovereign, united, democratic Europe," it added.

On Sunday, the incumbent Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialist Party (PSOE) won a national election, but failed to gain a parliamentary majority, forcing him to seek partners to form a new government.
