KUWAIT CITY, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurated on Wednesday Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway, one of the world's longest causeways.

Construction of the causeway was carried out by a consortium led by the Republic of Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. along with Kuwait's Combined Group Contracting Company.

The project uses the latest methods of civil engineering and environmentally-friendly technologies, said visiting ROK Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon at the inauguration, adding the causeway will be managed and operated through an intelligent transport system.

The project would play a pivotal role in linking the southern and northern regions of Kuwait and reduce commuting time between the two regions to about 20 minutes from one hour, he noted.

Saud Al-Naqi, deputy director general of the Public Authority for Roads and Transportation of Kuwait, said the causeway is part of the Kuwaiti integrated development plan.

The project is the new development gate for Kuwait and artery that will link Kuwait City with the Silk City which is considered the future financial and commercial center of Kuwait, he added.
