DAR ES SALAAM, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's media magnate, businessman and philanthropist Reginald Abraham Mengi died on Thursday in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, at the age of 76, his media outlets said.

ITV and Radio One did not mention the cause of Mengi's death. Mengi was born in Kilimanjaro region on May 29, 1942.

Mengi, who was executive chairman of IPP Group of Companies, died six months after the death of his former wife and IPP Limited co-founder, Mercy Anna Mengi. Mercy Anna died in a hospital in South Africa.

Mengi once served as chairman of Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) and the Tanzania Environment Management Council (NEMC), the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF).

Until his death he was chairman of Media Owners Association of Tanzania.

Following the death of Mengi, Tanzanian President John Magufuli sent a condolence message via his twitter page.

"I am shocked by the death of an elder and a friend Dr Reginald Mengi," Magufuli said. "I will remember him for his immense contribution to the development of our country and for the words he wrote in his book I Can, I Must, I Will - The Spirit of Success."

Magufuli launched the book in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, in July last year.

In the book, Mengi narrates how he was born into a poor family but managed to beat circumstances and establish one of the largest businesses in Tanzania.
