LONDON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday said he does not consent to being extradited to the U.S. over charges related to leaking government secrets.
The latest development came one day after the Australian-born, 47, was sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching the Bail Act in wake of his arrest last month.
Local media said Assange appeared by video link at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
He was quoted as saying that he does not wish to surrender himself for extradition "for doing journalism that has won many awards and protected many people."
The court heard that the "extradition process will take many months". The case was adjourned until May 30.
Assange took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy seven years ago to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations. But he has denied such allegations.
