JAKARTA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia would vie in 35 of 56 sports in the upcoming regional multisport event of SEA Games slated for November 30 to December 11 in the Philippines, targeting to secure up to 54 gold medals, a senior official at Indonesia Olympics Committee (KOI) said here on Friday.

"There are many indigenous sports contended in the Philippines that we don't have the athletes to vie in. Up to now KOI has recommended Indonesian team to take part only in 35 sports," the acting KOI secretary general, Hellen Sarita de Lima, said here.

All of the 35 recommended sports have the chance to contribute medals to Indonesian team, she said.

KOI has appointed five experts to monitor and evaluate performance of each training centers in preparing the athletes assessed to have the chance to obtain medals in SEA Games, she said.

"Clearance for the athletes sent to SEA Games would be very much depended on results of the training centers' pertinent assessment over their athletes," she added.

Selection on national SEA Games athletes would be intensified within the remaining 6 months before the SEA Games, so as to get the fittest ones officially registered in the biennial sports event to represent Indonesian team.

The selection process would also consider composition of junior and senior athletes as Indonesia has an intention to give more chances for junior athletes to vie in international events on regeneration concerns, she added.
